Academy of Accelerated Learning (AAL) was established in 1998 to provide academic enrichment activities for low income, high risk youth. AAL is a Texas Open Enrollment Charter School which receives its funds primarily from State and Federal Agencies. Funds are generally obtained through a competitive process and continued funding is dependent upon meeting and exceeding specific contractual requirements with respect to performance goals.

How to Enroll at the Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc.
Who can apply?
The Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc. is a Texas Open Enrollment Charter School. Students who will be attending the Pre-K 3 through 5th Grades for the next school year from any district may apply for enrollment. (Pre-K 3 and Pre-4 applicants must meet the State Requirements please see below for requirements)
Tuition
The Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc. is a tuition-free charter school that is federally funded through the state.
Requirements for Admission
There are no pre-qualification requirements or testing criteria required to attend the Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc. Early registration and submission of enrollment application and availability of space are essential factors for determination for enrollment.
As a state charter, AAL requires 98% attendance and no less than 90% attendance.
Lottery Process
The Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc. is a Texas Open Enrollment Charter School and currently accepts all enrollment applications for any student in The Greater Houston Metropolitan Area.
Space availability is limited and a Lottery Process may be conducted if the number of received student enrollment applications exceeds the available school capacity.

Required Documentation for Enrollment
Original birth Certificate,
Original immunization records (date, month and year of every immunization received),
Original Social Security Card,
Copy of students last report card,
Copy of Student Withdrawal Form from the students previous school of attendance
Copy of the most recent TAKS scores or (Stanford),
Copy of Special Education Records (if applicable)
Required Criteria for Enrollment for Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4 Grades:
To be eligible for enrollment in a PK class, a child must be 3 or 4 years of age on September 1 of the current school year and must :
1.be unable to speak and comprehend the English language; or
2.be educationally disadvantaged (eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program [NSLP]) ; or
3.be homeless ; or
4.be the child of an active duty member of the armed forces of the United States, including the state military forces or a reserved component of the armed forces, who is ordered to active duty by proper authority; or
5.be the child of a member of the armed forces of the United States, including the state military forces or a reserved component of the armed forces, who was injured or killed while serving on active duty; or
6.have ever been in the conservatorship (foster care) of the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) following an adversary hearing.
Because of recent changes in federal law, educationally disadvantaged students, as defined by the Texas Education Code (TEC), §5.001(4), now include all students who are eligible for Head Start.
Once a student is determined to be eligible for PK, the student remains eligible for the remainder of the current school year in the district in which he or she resides or is otherwise entitled to attend for Foundation School Program benefits, with the exception described in 7.2.2.
7.2.2 PK Eligibility Based on a Student's Being Limited English Proficient (LEP)
Appropriate PK staff determine that a student is eligible for PK based on not speaking and comprehending the English language by
1.administering the home language survey (if a language other than English is indicated on any portion of the survey, then the student must be tested for English proficiency); and
2.testing students using oral instruments from the list of state approved tests for assessment of limited English proficient students.

When was the Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc. established?
The Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc., received its charter license from The State of Texas in 1998.
Is the Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc., part of the Houston Independent School District?
No. The Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc. is not associated with the Houston Independent School District. As an independent school district, AAL reserves the right to create, establish and enforce its own school rules and guidelines all in compliance with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) guidelines.
What grades are accepted at the Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc.?

What are the school office hours?
The school office hours are Monday Friday from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm

Are school uniforms required?
Yes. All students attending the Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc. must wear a school uniform. The school uniform is as follows:

What is the Student to Teacher Ratio
The state currently states a 22:1 ratio is acceptable for each class.
How do I turn in an excuse for my childs absence?
After an absence, the student will give the Attendance Clerk or his or her teacher a written excuse from the parent or from a medical professional stating the reason for the absence and a phone number for verification. Absences are excused for the students personal illness, illness or death or an immediate family member, participation in legitimate school activities with permission of the principal, or emergency/extenuating circumstances as recognized by the principal or principals designee. Absences for religious holidays are not counted against a students attendance record as long as parent notifies the school in writing prior to the students observance of a religious holiday. Any other planned absences must have prior approval of campus administrator. The parent must turn in the excuse within three days of the absence. Failure to provide documentation for Excused Absences may result in denial of credit.
What to do in case of a weather emergency?
As an independent school district, but residing within the HISD area, the Academy of Accelerated Learning, Inc., will follow all weather advisory recommendations for school closures announced by the HISD superintendent. In the event of inclement weather, employees, students, and parents should listen to radio and television announcements for information about the closing of schools and offices.
Can my child fail a grade for excessive absences?
Yes. A student may fail a grade should he or she have an excessive amount of absences
§§25.092 and 11.158 (Ninety Percent Rule)
Section 25.092 conditions credit for a class on a students attendance for at least 90 percent of the days a class is offered. A student who is in attendance for at least 75 percent, but less than 90 percent, of the days a class is offered may be given credit if the student completes a plan approved by the principal that provides for the student to meet the instructional requirement of the class. If the student is under the jurisdiction of a court in a criminal or juvenile justice proceeding, the student may not receive credit by completing such a plan without the consent of the presiding judge.
How can I schedule a Parent/Teacher conference?
To schedule a Parent/Teacher Conference you have several options:
1.Call the school directly to set an appointment
2.Email your childs teacher at his or her email
3.Fax a letter to the school requesting a conference
4.Send a letter in your student folder
How do I sign my child out if he or she needs to leave for an appointment?
All parents, guardians or designated persons must sign the student(s) out at the main office only. Parents may not walk in and proceed to the classroom and pick up students.
All students for early dismissals for appointments must be picked up before 2:30 pm.
Can I celebrate my child birthday at school?
Yes. Students birthday celebrations are certainly encouraged and welcomed. Celebrations may only take place on the last calendar day of each month only. Parties times are scheduled from 1:30 2:30 pm.
Will parents be permitted to enter the school building?
Yes. For the first week of school, August 22 August 26, 2011 parents will be permitted to enter the building to get familiar with the school, teacher, classroom setting and other areas of the School. After this time period, all parents must schedule a parent/teacher conference to visit with the classroom teacher or other school administrator or personnel.
What is the morning drop-off process for students?
Parents will have a drive-up and drop-off process. Parents will remain in their vehicles and follow the car line up to the drop off zone. Students will be escorted out of the vehicles and the student will walk into the school building and proceed to the cafeteria for breakfast.
What is the afternoon pick-up process for students?
All parents will receive a Car Hanging Tag to place on their rear view mirror. Each student will receive a number for identification same as the hanging tag. Each teacher will also have a listing of each childs number. A staff member will be outside with a hand held radio calling out the Car Hanging Tag number and each teacher in the classroom will hear the number and each child will walk out to the front of the building where he or she will be escorted and placed into the vehicle.
Where do I pick up my child if I am a walker? (parents who physically walk to school and have no vehicle available or who park off campus)
Walkers are those parents who do not have a vehicle of ownership and physically walk to school OR who park off campus and walk onto campus to pick up their child(ren). Parents will pick up these students in the back portion of the school cafeteria. Parents may not park on school campus and walk up to pick up students.
What is the process for students who ride private bus/daycare transportation?
Parents must fill out a Transportation form located in the main office. No student will be placed in any bus/daycare services vehicles without the transportation services registration/agreement on file. All students are gathered in the cafeteria and escorted to their bus/daycare of service.
AAL does not endorse, promote, contract, delegate responsibilities or negotiations with any private bus or daycare services. AAL is not responsible for fees, hours, accidents, lost/stolen items or any contractual notices between parents and bus/daycare transportation services.
What is the process for receiving free lunch for my child?
All students who attend AAL must complete a formal Child Nutrition Lunch Application. Upon completion and returning of the application to your campus, parents will receive a formal letter informing of the final determination/status for the lunch program. Lunch status is: Free, Reduced or Full Pay. Regardless of status all students must have a application on file.
May I eat lunch with my child?
There are opportunities to have with your child on special cultural/holidays for fall and spring semester. The fall semester is for Family Thanksgiving Dinner and the spring semester is Easter cultural/holiday lunch. Any other special lunch request maybe submitted in writing for consideration by the principal
May I volunteer in my childs class or other area of the school?
Yes. All parents are invited and encouraged to volunteer in their childs classroom at any time during the school year. ALL volunteers must complete a criminal background check each semester before being permitted to enter a classroom/campus. Volunteers may assist during class time and all school events.
All volunteers must check in and check out at the front office prior to reporting to the area of choice.

Texas students' graduation rate soars
AUSTIN – The Texas high school on-time graduation rate for the Class of 2010 soared to 84.3 percent, the highest rate posted during the TAKS-testing era and an increase of 3.7 percentage points over the previous year.
Each of the state’s four major ethnic groups showed strong gains. Rates for African-American and Hispanic students increased five percentage points or more over the past year.
Graduation rates for African-American students rose from 73.8 percent for the Class of 2009 to 78.8 percent for the Class of 2010. Hispanic students’ graduation rates were 73.5 percent in 2009, climbing to 78.8 percent for the Class of 2010.
Graduation rates for white and Asian students surpassed the 90 percent mark with the rate for white students at 91.6 percent while Asian/Pacific Islander students earned the highest rate at 93.8 percent.
“Texas continues to see improvements in public education as we work to strengthen accountability and raise standards in our schools,” said Gov. Rick Perry. “I am incredibly proud of this recent achievement, a true testament to the excellent educators that we have in our classrooms and the principled leadership that guides our state. I am confident we will continue to see remarkable progress in our schools that will sustain our educated workforce and build a stronger, more prosperous Texas.”
“Our students are staying in school, accepting the challenge and meeting high achievement goals. It’s clear that our dedicated educators are providing students a strong foundation on which to build their future. We will continue to provide the tools necessary to maintain this outstanding progress,” said Commissioner of Education Robert Scott.
Graduation rates for local districts and schools will be available in late July.

History
Academy of Accelerated Learning (AAL) was established in 1998 to provide academic enrichment activities for low income, high risk youth. AAL is a minority owned private organization which receives its funds primarily from State and Federal agencies. Funds are generally obtained through a competitive process and continued funding is dependent upon meeting and exceeding specific contractual requirements with respect to performance goals.
Mission Statement
To develop an accelerated learning environment that clearly charts a path for empowerment for primarily at-risk students to become tomorrows problem solvers, thinkers, and leaders through participation in a wide variety of educational experiences appropriate to their age, interests, and needs. Our school staff will be encouraged to be innovative and will be given vehicles to plan, develop, and implement programs and activities that foster responsibility, academic achievement and lifelong learning in a safe and nurturing environment. To provide innovative and accelerated classroom training in Remedial Basic Skills, Life Skills, and academic programs for Pre-K 5th grade.
